- Peintre français d'origine écossaise (Bordeaux 1829 – Paris 1890). Quelque temps élève de Belloc puis de Roqueplan, il se consacra très vite aux scènes sportives et militaires (Avant le départ, Paris, Orsay), à la représentation des chiens et surtout des chevaux, dont, avec une véritable ferveur, il se fit le portraitiste. Sa peinture, d'une touche un peu menue mais preste, le rapproche des impressionnistes, que très tôt il admira. Le musée de Bordeaux possède un ensemble de ses œuvres et le Tate London un certain nombre de ses tableaux de chasse à courre, comme celui vendu ici.

- French painter of Scottish descent born in Bordeaux in 1829 (reign of Charles X) and died in Paris in 1890.Close to the Impressionnists, he painted sports and military scenes, dogs and horses mainly. His works are in Paris Bercy and Bordeaux Museums among others, in France and at the Tate London.
