In the 17th century, the
Quilombo dos Palmares, which
was sheltering more than
twenty thousand people, held
almost two hundred kilometers
long, in the forest zone of the
Captaincy of Pernambuco, Brazil.
Resisted for more than one
hundred years to the
war of the Portuguese
colonists and entrusted with
the Dutch, and is
considered the largest and most
important quilombo of all
the Americas. The
historiography of Palmares, for
its quirks, has been the
subject of theses, analyses and
discussions and divided
in three phases over the
past 300 years. Your
bibliography, relatively small, is
marked by almost
definitive works on the basis
of scarcity and typicality
of the primary sources
available.
After decades of
militancy and joints, the
Brazilian black movement
finally succeeded in the
Serra da Barriga, last stronghold
palmarino, were designated
as Historic, archaeological,
Ethnographic and
landscape, in 1986,
imortalizando this site as a symbol
of struggle for freedom and a
History of resistance,
of social and political
organization. Later, in
March 21, 1997 Zumbi dos Palmares,
was recognized by the Federal Government
as national hero.
No século XVII, o Quilombo dos Palmares, que chegou a abrigar mais
de vinte mil pessoas, ocupou quase duzentos quilômetros de
extensão, na zona da mata da então Capitania de Pernambuco.
Resistiu por mais de cem anos às investidas bélicas dos
colonizadores portugueses e holandeses, e é considerado o maior e
mais importante quilombo de todas as Américas. A historiografia de
Palmares, pelas suas peculiaridades, tem sido tema de teses,
análises e discussões e dividida basicamente em três fases, ao
longo dos últimos 300 anos. A sua bibliografia, relativamente
pequena, é marcada por obras quase que definitivas, em função da
escassez e tipicidade das fontes primárias disponíveis.
Após décadas de militância e articulações, o Movimento Negro
Brasileiro finalmente conseguiu que a Serra da Barriga, último
reduto palmarino, fosse tombada como Patrimônio Histórico,
Arqueológico, Etnográfico e Paisagístico, em 1986, imortalizando
este local como símbolo de luta pela liberdade e referência de uma
História de resistência, de organização social e política.
Posteriormente, em 21 de março de 1997, Zumbi dos Palmares foi
reconhecido pelo Governo Federal como Herói Nacional.
